316L Stainless Steel Instrument Parts CNC Machining Project | US Client Custom Sample & Mass Production Case
Project Overview
This is a new product CNC customization project for a US musical instrument client, marking our first official online overseas cooperation. The client had long-term stable suppliers before but chose to give us an opportunity due to our professional technical support and proactive, sincere service. At the project initiation, the client only required the micro instrument parts to feature high hardness and excellent wear resistance, without confirming specific materials or mature processing solutions. Combining their application needs, performance standards and budget, we professionally screened and recommended SUS316L stainless steel, which perfectly matched the product’s durability and machining requirements.
Additionally, the client’s original drawings lacked detailed process design, which was not suitable for precision assembly and mass production. Our technical team conducted a comprehensive process review and optimized the drawings with standard fine chamfering treatment for all key edges. The project involves ultra-precision micro-part machining, complex deep logo engraving, standard M4 thread turning, diversified surface finishing and urgent sample delivery. We overcame multiple technical challenges, completed sampling ahead of schedule and secured formal mass production orders.
Key Technical Challenges & Solutions
1. Deep Engraving of Complex Logo on Micro Parts
The client ordered 5 types of miniature precision parts (9 pieces per type). A major technical difficulty was 1mm deep logo engraving on 12mm tiny components with intricate font details. Conventional engraving processes fail to achieve such deep precision engraving on micro parts and easily cause pattern distortion and part deformation.
Solutions: We adopted a hybrid process of CNC shaping + high-precision laser engraving. After urgent on-site testing, we provided clients with multiple depth samples and matched quotations. The whole technical confirmation and solution negotiation was completed within one day.
2. Standard M4 Threading on Hard Elastic 316L Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel owns high hardness and elasticity, bringing great difficulties to micro thread turning, with common defects of slippery threads and uneven tooth profiles.
Solutions: Our technicians optimized tool selection, cutting parameters and feeding speed. After 30 minutes of precise debugging, we produced fully standard M4 threads that met strict assembly tolerances.
3. Custom Diversified Surface Finishing
Three surface treatments were required: single polishing, PVD TiN coating and PVD chrome plating. Manual polishing cannot handle tiny dead corners of micro parts, resulting in inconsistent surface quality.
Solutions: We applied professional tumble polishing for batch production to ensure full-detail smoothness and uniform gloss, creating optimal surface conditions for subsequent PVD coating and improving product consistency and yield.
4. Urgent Ahead-of-Schedule Delivery
The client set a 10-day tight deadline for the whole sampling process covering multiple complex procedures. We arranged full-process tracking, reasonable workshop scheduling and overtime production.
Result: All production and quality inspection were completed in 8 days, with samples delivered via DHL fast shipping.
